Berglund, capital improve-
ments projects manager for
Bernalillo County.
The James McGrane, Jr.
Public Safety Complex is
named after Bernalillo County
Sheriff's Deputy James
McGrane, Jr. who was shot
and killed in the line of duty
near the site of the facility on
March 22, 2006.
Berglund said the total con-
struction cost of the project
is $4.5 million, including
tax. He said the county fire
department and sheriff's
department operation now on
South Zamora Road will move
to the new 20,000-plus
square-foot safety complex.
The facility will accommo-
date up to 10 full-time fire
fighters on a 24/7 work
schedule with a three-bay
apparatus area to house up to
four fire-fighting vehicles, a
sheriff's department staff of
25, a temporary holding cell
as well as a temporary evi-
dence storage area, Berglund
said. "It's going to be a much
better working facility for the

deputies," said Bernalillo
County Sheriff's department
spokeswoman, Lt. Jessica
Tyler.
"The facility will also be
equipped to operate as an
Emergency Operations Center
that can handle large emer-
gency events in the East
Mountains and will include a
helipad and mobile com-
mand/RV hook-up area,"
Berglund said.
Frank Williams with
Bernalillo County Public
Works said N.M. 337 will be
upgraded to support the addi-
tional traffic on the entrance
shared with Roosevelt Middle
School.
Williams said the right-
hand turn lane for south-
bound traffic on 337 will be
lengthened and a new left-
hand turn lane for north-
bound traffic will be added at
the intersection with Public
School Road.
Anticipating future traffic
concerns, the Village of Tijeras
recently discussed the possi-
bility of a traffic light at the
intersection.
Village Mayor Gloria
Chavez said a traffic-impact
study showed a traffic light at
the intersection is not war-
ranted at this time, but added,
"We just want to make sure
that everybody is seeing the
clear picture that a light may
be coming in the future."
